The Raiders of Las Vegas have begun to step up their hunt for a new offensive coordinator. Luke Getsy, a former offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, is one of the prominent players the organization is pursuing.
According to an X post from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on January 23, the Raiders intend to interview Getsy.
The Bears ranked second in the NFL in terms of rushing (182.1 yards per game) in 2023, but they were 27th in terms of passing (182.1 yards per game). Getsy’s firing this offseason was the result of this. The Raiders will most likely have a young quarterback in 2024 who has to develop because he struggled to develop quarterback Justin Fields’ passing ability. This is the biggest worry about him.
According to Pelissero, the Raiders also intend to speak with Alex Van Pelt, the former offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.
Like Getsy, Van Pelt was just let go from his position. That circumstance is a little more complicated, though. Van Pelt was primarily responsible for coaching the quarterback position for the Browns; he did not call plays. Following an early playoff exit, Cleveland made the decision to restructure their coaching staff, and Van Pelt was one of the casualties.
There are many unknowns with him because he hasn’t been a team’s primary playcaller since the Buffalo Bills in 2009, but he might have some potential. In 2006, he began working as an NFL coach.
Robinson, Zac Furthermore in the Mix
The Raiders may also elect not to appoint a retread to the position of offensive coordinator. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer stated in a January 22 X post that the team hopes to speak with Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator The Las Vegas Raiders
Given the success that former Rams assistants under Sean McVay have had across the NFL, Robinson is a strong contender. Among the notable figures are head coaches of the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Zac Taylor of the Green Bay Packers.
Robinson is likely to be the next protégé of McVay to call plays in the NFL. There’s a chance the Raiders won’t have a chance since the NFL is interested in him. If the Raiders can convince him to move to Las Vegas, he would be a very interesting addition to the team.
Additional Candidates to Watch
An early front-runner for the Raiders offensive coordinator position was former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. His years of play calling and his prior head coaching experience may make him attractive to Las Vegas. Although they were considering him, the Bears ultimately decided to sign Shane Waldron.
Klint Kubiak, the coordinator of the passing game for the San Francisco 49ers, may possibly wind up as an offensive coordinator in 2024. He worked as a playcaller for the Vikings in 2021 before to this. He is someone who would make sense for the Raiders because the 49ers have likewise been a factory for elite offensive assistants.
Antonio Pierce, the head coach, will need to choose the ideal offensive coordinator. He requires someone who can take charge of the offence because his background is in defence. A difficult season could result from choosing the incorrect offensive coordinator.
