Any team that wants to hire him still has the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches of all time. Only one team has conducted an interview with him in the more than twelve days since he formally left the Patriots.
As previously said above, other organizations are debating whether or not to sign him. At least one does not currently have a head coach vacancy, while at least one does.
On the surface, it seems surprising that Belichick isn’t more popular considering his extraordinary success and his lasting reputation as a top coach when it comes to getting a team ready for a game and coaching it during it. The idea of supporting a coach who hasn’t been very successful since losing quarterback Tom Brady, meanwhile, has left many fans conflicted.
Belichick’s credibility is still in doubt. He would presumably answer to CEO Rich McKay in Atlanta. That may not be Belichick’s cup of tea.
As previously mentioned, there are others who think Belichick would be uninterested in leading a team in a major media market. That stems from a desire to prevent the dynamic of reporters actively attempting to cultivate sources at any and all levels of the business, as one source put it over the weekend. Belichick doesn’t have to be as concerned about reporters getting close to people he has to trust to pull it off when there is less media covering a team.
But even outside of the Falcons, zip is crucial. It’s astounding to consider that just one team has conducted interviews with a coach as experienced as Belichick.
We’ll observe if it alters. There are five open positions. Theoretically, more might still surface.
