Now officially gone is Rhys Hoskins’s time in Philadelphia. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the second-longest-tenured player on the 2023 Phillies has agreed to a $34 million, two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. After the 2024 season, there is an opt-out clause in the contract.
When it was revealed that Bryce Harper would take over first base going forward, it became clear that the Phillies would not attempt to re-sign their former player. Hoskins’ usual seasons of thirty or more home runs will be missed by the Phillies, and it will be challenging to replicate his offensive output. Although he was not always reliable, the club was aware of what to expect from him.
With their new addition, the Brewers will have a productive right-handed hitting power bat. He’ll play a major role in their lineup. They’re going through a lot of changes as a squad right now. Due to the team’s recent payroll cuts, Hoskins, Christian Yelich, and William Contreras are probably going to be key components of their unimpressive offence.
The former fifth-round draft pick blasted 148 home runs, drove in 405 runs, and finished with an 8.846 OPS in 667 games during his six seasons in Philadelphia. When he was wearing the red pinstripes, he was an effective player. His 2022 NLDS and NLCS performances will live on in Phillies history, despite the fact that his postseason numbers are worse than his regular-season ones.
Both his teammates and the fans in Philadelphia will miss Hoskins. Even though his bad defence and protracted hitting slumps occasionally made him the object of ire, he played a significant role in the Phillies’ rebuilding years.
The unfortunate ACL injury that kept him out of his final season wearing a Phillies uniform denied fans a glimpse of the rebuild’s face. Thankfully, he was a member of the 2022 squad that achieved the incredible feat of winning the World Series. Both a fantastic clubhouse leader and a decent player are joining his new team.
For the first time, the Brewers visit Philadelphia for a three-game series from June 3–5. This will allow fans to see Hoskins in his new uniform and to greet him appropriately at Citizens Bank Park.
