The Falcons are in the midst of a search for a new head coach, and as a result, they face an equally crucial decision.
Atlanta not only needs to replace Arthur Smith, but it also needs to upgrade at quarterback. Smith should not bear the lion’s share of the blame for his mistakes. Only a few offensive thinkers could have been successful alongside Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke; they kept the Falcons back.
There is an intriguing crop of quarterbacks in the draft, but the free agent market is fairly depressed. I expect Justin Fields to be traded; nevertheless, the club’s approach to signal caller will be determined by the next head coach.
A younger candidate, such as Fields or a draft prospect, would make more sense, although a veteran, such as Bill Belichick, who is undoubtedly in his sunset years and is still regarded the favourite to fill the post, makes more sense.
If it looks, walks, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. The writing was on the wall. According to ESPN’s Jeremy
Kirk Cousins and Bill Belichick will be Falcons … and win the NFC South
The feeling out of New England was that Belichick planned to target an established veteran quarterback for the Patriots in 2024. If he gets the Atlanta job, as some expect, he can follow a similar blueprint.
Cousins very well might re-sign with Minnesota, but if not, the Falcons offer several high-end skill players on offense and an improving defense — they’re the proverbial quarterback away. “[Belichick] can help a talented yet underachieving team, and Atlanta is that,” an AFC executive said. “Cousins would be a great fit there.”
Fowler, an AFC official feels Bill Belichick and Kirk Cousins will be the best veteran options on the market.
“And win the NFC South” would result in the Falcons’ first postseason game since 2017 and the first home playoff game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium history.
It’s certainly conceivable. With a few free agent signings and another top-10 draft choice, the roster will be in position to win the division. Bill Belichick will most likely be the best head coach in the NFC South, and if Cousins abandons the Vikings in favour of playing for a first-ballot Hall of Famer, as he has stated, the team will also have the top quarterback in the division.
It is hardly a long-term remedy for the Falcons at either position, but Arthur Blank is definitely not acting under the pretext of a 10-year plan.
