Vic Fangio will be coaching for the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field this season, and he will be in the same complex as his beloved sports club.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the experienced football coach, who loves baseball and the Phillies, is closing in on a contract to join the Eagles as defensive coordinator on Thursday.
Growing up in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, Fangio supported Dick Allen and the Phillies as a boy. He went on to become a defensive coordinator for six different NFL teams. From 2019 to 2021, he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos. According to a feature by Jon Greenberg of The Athletic, the 65-year-old has remained involved with the team throughout his adult life and coaching career. Fangio witnessed the rush of Rhys Hoskins’ bat spike during Game 3 of the 2022 National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park.
In addition to being a baseball enthusiast, Fangio has coached football in Philadelphia for a short while. He was a defensive assistant for the 1984 USFL-champion Philadelphia Stars club that played its regular-season games at the Vet and its postseason games at Franklin Field. In 2022, he served as a consultant for the Eagles as well. Following a heartbreaking first-round loss in this year’s NFL playoffs, Fangio will now return to Philadelphia as a permanent member of head coach Nick Sirianni’s staff after serving as defensive coordinator in Miami for a year.
Before taking on Fangio’s Dolphins in October, Sirianni stated, “I really value the relationship I was able to develop with Coach Fangio.” Great football mind, great person. We are aware that any defence led by Vic Fangio will present a challenge for us. I hope he’s a little distracted by the MLB postseason because he’s a huge Phillies fan.
“But really good person, really good coach. I cherish our friendship and the time we spent together the previous year.
