This week, Magic Johnson received criticism for a goof of his.
The retired Basketball Hall of Famer Johnson discussed the Indiana Pacers’ recent blockbuster trade for All-Star big man Pascal Siakam on his X page on Tuesday. Johnson called it a terrific deal and gave thanks to Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan for the decision.
However, Johnson erred because Buchanan was not the real mastermind behind the move. Although Buchanan holds the title of general manager for the Pacers, the team’s president of basketball operations, Kevin Pritchard, makes the final decisions.
Pritchard responded by pointing out Johnson’s error.
“Ahem, yeah, fantastic trade, Chad!” With sarcasm, Pritchard wrote.
The typical fan would likely be prone to making that kind of error because they are unlikely to be familiar with the subtleties of the Pacers’ front office setup. However, given that Johnson was a former NBA executive (working for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2017 to 2019), you would think he would have more knowledge. Additionally, by 2017, the Pritchard-Buchanan hierarchy had already been established, and Johnson had already paid a punishment for interfering with a Pacers player.
However, Johnson’s X page is more well-known for its amusement value than for its in-depth research—or lack thereof. It was entertaining enough to watch Johnson get fried by Pritchard in front of everyone, no doubt.
