Magic Johnson was called out for a blunder this week.
On Tuesday, Johnson, a retired Basketball Hall of Famer, tweeted on his X page about the Indiana Pacers’ recent blockbuster trade for All-Star big man Pascal Siakam. Johnson credited Pacers GM Chad Buchanan with the transaction, calling it a tremendous acquisition.
Johnson made a mistake, though, because Buchanan was not truly responsible for the deal. While Buchanan is the Pacers’ general manager, Kevin Pritchard, the team’s president of basketball operations, is in charge of making decisions.
Pritchard responded by pointing out Johnson’s error.
“Eh hem…”Yeah, nice trade, Chad!” Pritchard cynically wrote.
The average fan is unlikely to be familiar with the subtleties of the Pacers’ front office system, making such an error more likely. But you’d think Johnson would know better because he was a former NBA executive (for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2017 to 2019). Furthermore, by 2017, the Pritchard-Buchanan hierarchy had already been established, and Johnson had been penalized for meddling with a Pacers player.
Nonetheless, Johnson’s X page is notable for its entertainment value rather than its in-depth analysis (or lack thereof). Indeed, it was quite entertaining to see Johnson being cooked by Pritchard in front of everyone.
