The Houston Texans surpassed their low expectations for the 2023 season, with numerous players setting career highs. Defensive end Jonathan Greenard recorded a career-high 12.5 sacks, while cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. ended his second season with five interceptions. However, no player made a bigger leap than wide receiver Nico Collins. Collins enjoyed a breakout season thanks to good health and improved quarterback play from rookie C.J. Stroud, finishing with a career-high 1,297 yards on 80 receptions and eight touchdowns. Collins improved so much in his third season that Pro Football Focus named him the Texans’ most improved player for the season.
“Collins realized his full potential during his first season with C.J. Stroud at quarterback. He suffered a calf injury in the second half of the season and missed some time, but he concluded the regular season with a 91.0 grade. “Including his postseason performance, he earned a 91.4 overall grade that ranked third among wide receivers in 2023.” As per Pro Football Focus.
Collins, the Texans’ best wide receiver in Houston’s passing attack, had five games with 100 yards or more. His finest career performance came in the Texans’ Week 18 game against the Indianapolis Colts, when he had nine receptions for 195 yards and one score. Collins became the fourth player in team history to reach 1,000 receiving yards, joining Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins, and Brandon Cooks.
