This is the second time in collegiate athletics that the Volunteers have been the subject of a major investigation, according to a CBS Sports story. The NCAA might view it as a repeat offender and impose tougher penalties.
Under Jeremy Pruitt, Tennessee experienced this from 2018 to 2020.
According to reports, over twenty candidates and their families received recruiting inducements and illegal benefits totaling $60,000 from Pruitt and his staff over the course of three years. Pruitt currently works as a physical education teacher and junior high boys’ basketball coach at Plainview High School after receiving a six-year show cause sentence.
According to three players Pruitt coached for Alabama football, he wasn’t the main cause of the issues. Pruitt watches Ryan Anderson, Will Lowery, and Nick Gentry win BCS National Championships.
Under Pruitt, Anderson was a standout edge rusher for the Crimson Tide in 2016.
With Pruitt absent and the Vols under pressure, Lowery, Gentry, and Anderson are spearheading the “Free JP” movement to get Pruitt reinstated for collegiate football. Currently, hiring Pruitt for football would result in a one-year punishment for the institution.
