He was on their postseason roster and appeared in four games, starting two. The righty had a 3.33 ERA and allowed three runs in 8 1/3 innings pitched. Philadelphia let him depart in free agency, and he signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They chose to trade him to the Cleveland Guardians after he posted a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts. As his problems persisted, the Guardians assigned him to a task before releasing him. The one-time All-Star was considered to be done playing Major League Baseball, but Jon Heyman of The New York Post says that many organizations were present during one of his throwing sessions.

The New York Yankees have been looking for arms all offseason and may look to the lower-cost market to address this requirement. Given his troubles last season, it seemed doubtful that a team will use Syndergaard in their rotation. The Phillies were not specifically listed as one among the 15 clubs that came to see him throw, but they may be interested in bringing back their former starter to provide depth and provide another bullpen option.
