With Dan Quinn taking over as head coach of the Washington Commanders, the defence should improve. With names on the trade block and in free agency this offseason, Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department suggests trading for Charvarius Ward.
Quinn was the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, and the team ended in the top seven in both points and yards. The Cowboys also had the most turnovers throughout that time, forcing 93. According to Bleacher Report’s hypothetical transaction, the 49ers would trade Ward for a third-round draft pick.
“The Commander’s defence requires assistance on the back end. The 49ers traded their 2024 third-round pick to Washington for Young, and they are dealing with a potentially problematic cap scenario. If the Commanders could return their third-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for Ward, both teams would benefit.
“Will San Francisco want to relocate Ward? Definitely not. In 2023, he was the team’s best cover corner, allowing only a 64.5 passer rating in coverage. However, he is entering the final year of his contract and will have a cap charge of $17.9 million.
The commanders need pass rushers.
Following a season in which the Commanders moved Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the deadline, replacing them should be top priority. Pressure on the quarterback is essential, and Washington’s current roster will require the addition of guys capable of doing so.
Charvarius Ward is another excellent target for them as they seek to add top-tier defenders. He has spent the majority of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, so he is used to winning. Bringing in someone who has a winning attitude and understands what it takes is also critical for a Commanders squad that may be rebuilding.
Ward was chosen second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2023.
According to Bleacher Report, if the Commanders wanted to land him, they could take some of the dead money from his contract.
“Theoretically, the Commanders could agree to take on some of the $17.2 million in dead money remaining on Ward’s deal to facilitate a deal and lighten San Francisco’s cap burden.”
Dan Quinn’s job is to fix the defence.
The Washington Commanders were the weakest defensive club in football in terms of points allowed per game. Washington allowed an abysmal 30.5 points per game. They were last in passing yards allowed per game (262.2 yards), 27th in running yards allowed per game (126.8), and 23rd in takeaways per game (1.1).
All of these stats will improve under Quinn if he can supplement the same techniques and the Commander’s front office recruits players such as Charvarius Ward. Changing this defence will take time, but if Quinn can expedite the process, Washington will be in a far better position than they were this season, when they finished with the second worst record in football and did not compete in most games.
