The Houston Texans outperformed expectations in 2023, thanks to breakout performances across the board. Few were more surprising than linebacker Blake Cashman. Cashman has unexpectedly emerged as a key member of Houston’s defensive core. His athleticism kept him on the field during passing downs, and he took the sixth-most defensive snaps. After spending the first three years of his career with the New York Jets, Cashman was dealt for a sixth-round pick in 2022. He wouldn’t develop until linebacker expert DeMeco Ryans took over as Texans coach. Now that he’s a free agency, Houston must make a decision at the second level of its defence.
According to Pro Football Focus, just five qualified linebackers had a higher rating than Cashman. Only cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. outperformed the other Houston starters. His standout performance came in a 19-tackle game against the Arizona Cardinals, although he had been a steady presence all season. Extending Cashman, which PFF estimates will cost $4.25 million per year for two years, is the simplest solution.
However, the Texans may enter the open market. Kenneth Murray Jr., linebacker with the Los Angeles Chargers, appears to be a popular candidate. He has first-round pedigree and athleticism, but Murray’s case is more difficult to prove. Unlike Cashman, Murray has not had the breakout season his athleticism predicted. He lacks eye control and aggressiveness, making him difficult to trust on the run.
