Kevin Koger, who was previously the tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, was hired by the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday to fill the team’s final offensive position coach opening. Along with defensive line coach Jay Rodgers, Koger is the second former Chargers assistant hired by new head coach Raheem Morris, replacing Justin Peelle. From 2008 to 2011, Koger, 34, was a tight end at the University of Michigan. As a senior, he caught 21 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns, earning him an honourable mention on the All-Big Ten team.
A month before the 2012 NFL Draft, Koger tore his Achilles tendon, which kept him out of the running. He began coaching at Saline High School, which is located in Ann Arbour, Michigan, later that year. He was the tight ends coach at the institution. Koger joined Michigan as a graduate assistant in 2013 and stayed there for two years before moving on to the University of Tennessee to take up the same position. Koger served as Eastern Kentucky University’s receivers coach and special teams coordinator from 2016 to 2018, a position he used to his advantage to land a position as the offensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers. After two years in Green Bay, Koger accepted the Chargers’ offer to become their tight ends coach, and he remained with them through the current campaign.
