Hugh Freeze appeared to be completing Auburn’s 2024 coaching staff when they lost a coach to the NFL.
Earlier this week, Freeze officially hired DJ Durkin as Auburn’s next defensive coordinator. This move completed the coaching staff for the time being.
Auburn’s defensive line coach, Jeremy Garrett, is reportedly leaving for the NFL. He will coach the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“It’s just the technique, and being consistent with the technique every play,” former Auburn defensive lineman Marcus Harris said of Garrett following the first Senior Bowl practice. “It’s just energy and being myself. He let me be myself. Coach Garrett is going to be an excellent coach in the future.”
Garrett was a key component of Auburn’s recent recruiting success. Auburn made a big effort for defensive lineman in the 2024 class, signing players such as TJ Lindsey, Amaris Williams, and Malik Blocton. Auburn has many major defensive linemen committed for the 2025 class. In December, Auburn added two defensive lineman through the transfer portal: Gauge Keys from Kansas and Trill Carter from Texas.
Garrett accepted the Auburn defensive line post after holding the same position at Liberty. Garrett followed Freeze to Auburn before taking the opportunity to coach in the NFL. Liberty’s defensive line under Garrett was regarded as quite effective. Auburn’s defensive line in 2023 performed better than many thought going into the season.
Garrett worked as an assistant defensive line coach for the Clevland Browns for two years before to joining Liberty.
