ESPN BREAKING NEWS: Browns On The Verge Of Signing Former Washington Commanders QB To Replace Veteran QB Joe Flacco

The Washington Commanders signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year, $8 million contract last offseason. He featured in only two games with the Commanders, in Weeks 15 and 16. Brissett did what he has done throughout his career: he came out and produced passable stats, tossing three touchdowns and zero picks. Brissett may also aid his previous team, the Cleveland Browns.

Washington will most likely move on from him this summer because they have the second overall pick and are expected to choose a quarterback. That leaves Brissett looking for a team to sign him, possibly a contending one. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report identified seven inexpensive NFL free agents, including Brissett.

“Teams looking for a quarterback will find some fascinating possibilities in free agency this offseason. Kirk Cousins leads the list of upcoming free agents, followed closely by Baker Mayfield, who recently revived his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This offseason, there is less talent available on the free agent market for quarterbacks. It’s unlikely that a team will sign him as a starter, but he may serve as an effective backup.

“Jacoby Brissett sits between the likely starters and the dedicated backups.” He signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Washington Commanders last summer but was never given the opportunity to start over second-year signal-caller Sam Howell.

Jacoby Brissett Has Proven He Can Do His Job When Called Upon.
The 31-year-old has been in the league since 2016, serving as both a backup and a starter when needed. When called upon, he does his job. That was demonstrated in two of the previous three seasons, when he started games for the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins.

In 2022, he passed for 2,608 yards, 12 touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 64% completion rate.

If the Washington Commanders do choose a quarterback, Brissett is worth retaining. Veterans are needed to guide rookie players the ropes, and he can do that with anyone they wind up picking. Knox wrote on that concept.

“However, Brissett has already demonstrated his ability to be an effective bridge starter. He had a strong 88.9 QB rating for the Browns and an even higher (146.8 rating) with the Commanders in limited action last year. He would be an excellent addition to a team wanting to select a rookie with a high overall pick or with uncertainty at the position.”

A return to the Cleveland Browns would be ‘logical’.
Deshaun Watson suffered a significant injury in 2023, sustaining a displaced fracture of his right glenoid in his right shoulder. He underwent surgery, and he is expected to return to health in 2024.

The Cleveland Browns signed Joe Flacco throughout the season, and he fully exceeded expectations. He guided them to the playoffs by passing for 300 yards or more in four of his five games.

According to Knox of Bleacher Report, returning to the Browns makes sense.

“A return to Cleveland would also be logical, given the injury uncertainty surrounding Deshaun Watson (shoulder) and the revolving door Cleveland had at quarterback before landing on Joe Flacco late in the season.”
