It is quite probable that the Cleveland Browns will modify Amari Cooper’s contract during this offseason in order to retain him on the roster. The Browns have “zero” intention of releasing Cooper.
Over the past several days, there has been considerable speculation over Cooper’s future with the Browns. Cooper will cost $23.7 million against the limit for the upcoming season, and Cleveland is searching for ways to save money without sacrificing quality.
The investment, however, has been well worth it ever since Cooper was brought over in a trade in the year 2022. Over the past two seasons, he has racked up 1,000 yards, and he was just recently selected for his sixth Pro Bowl appearance.
Terry Pluto, who writes for Cleveland.com, consulted his sources and came to the conclusion that Cooper will not be leaving any time soon. On Sunday, February 4, Pluto stated, “I keep hearing from some fans and media members that the Browns may cut Amari Cooper because of salary cap problems.” This was posted on the Browns’ official website. I verified with a reliable source in the National Football League, and they informed me that the Browns have absolutely no plans to let Amari Cooper depart.
After a Remarkable Season with Browns, Amari Cooper is Coming Off of It
It’s hardly a surprise, but Pluto’s story should put to rest the possibility of Cooper not wearing orange and brown next season.
However, the team does need to start thinking about the future when it comes to Cooper. He has just one year remaining on his agreement. A contract may both lock in the Browns’ best pass-catcher for several more years and lessen hit-cap impact for next season.
“We have seen a few divas as Browns receivers over the years. Cooper is like Nick Chubb, respected by coaches and teammates,” Pluto wrote. “I was told the Browns may not even have to rework his contract for salary cap purposes. If needed, they will.”
Cooper powered the Browns’ offence last season despite catching receptions from four different quarterbacks. He hauled up 1,250 yards on 72 receptions. Cooper’s greatest effort came on Christmas Eve against the Houston Texans. He caught 11 receptions for 265 yards, a club single-game record.
“Records are meant to be broken. At the end of the day, it’s simply numbers. I don’t take anything for granted, but it’s the past,” Cooper said on January 10. “I always tell myself, you know, I want to look back on my career in that nostalgic type of way that I think you’re alluding to after I’m done playing.
One of the objectives for the Browns this summer will be to get Cooper some help. Elijah Moore (59 receptions, 640 yards) and tight end David Njoku (81 catches, 882 yards) were excellent contributors. But Cleveland could use a dangerous second option opposite Cooper, which is something they’ll pursue this offseason.
“I think that’s definitely Andrew’s desire to add as many good players as you can,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski remarked on the possibility of adding to their arsenal on January 14. “But I feel really good about the guys on our roster—not to go through every guy, but really pleased with what these guys were able to accomplish. Amari Cooper, Dave Njoku, and Elijah Moore—I believe all had career-type years, and I’m pleased of those guys.”
Some wide receiver prospects that the Browns might look at are Tee Higgins, Mike Evans, and Calvin Ridley. It will come down to the amount of cap room the Browns can free up this summer.
