According to a new report, the Philadelphia Phillies are a hot pick among MLB executives for a big-name free agent signing before pitchers and catchers arrive at Spring Training next week.
After a decade of being a.500 or lower team, the Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as one of the National League’s elite teams, with a reputation for clutch play in the postseason. However, after losing in the 2022 World Series and falling short in the NLCS last year, the organization hoped to put together the last components of a championship team this winter.
The organization has remained relatively quiet this offseason, with the most notable move being the re-signing of homegrown star pitcher Aaron Nola. However, their patience may pay off, and they may be able to sign one of the greatest players available on the free agent market in the coming days.
The Philadelphia Phillies are significant competitors for signing Cody Bellinger and Jordan Montgomery before Spring Training.
On Sunday, USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale leaked some information that has been circulating in league circles regarding two specific impact players the Phillies could add to the team only days before pitchers and catchers arrive at Spring Training.
“Several executives think the Philadelphia Phillies could be a sleeper for one of the remaining marquee free agents in starter Jordan Montgomery or centre fielder Cody Bellinger,” Nightengale said in a statement. “Their only significant move has been re-signing Aaron Nola, and Bellinger would undoubtedly bring Gold Glove-caliber defence and another bat to balance the lineup. Montgomery would bolster the rotation’s top tier.
Both have unexpectedly remained on the free agency market this winter for the same reason. Both players’ asking costs have been deemed too high by prospective teams.
Bellinger is coming off his greatest season since earning the NL MVP title in 2019, with 26 home runs and a.307 batting average for the Chicago Cubs last year. Montgomery has grown into a reliable middle-of-the-rotation starter in recent years, playing an important role in the Texas Rangers’ championship squad in 2023.
