As is customary, the Senior Bowl practice week sparked several fresh rumours, two of which had to do with the Denver Broncos and were of a blockbuster kind. The Broncos were rumoured to be open to using Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II as a legitimate trade asset on Draft Day, provided that it resulted in the acquisition of one of the Big Three quarterbacks in the 2024 class.
The Broncos trading Surtain away, meanwhile, would simply be a last-ditch attempt to sweeten a trade package that was already loaded with players. With the No. 12 overall pick currently held, it very well might come down to one of the Big Three if head coach Sean Payton has his heart set on it.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently assessed the Broncos’ circumstances in order to calculate the cost of a potential trade deal with the Chicago Bears in order to advance to the No. 1 overall pick. Unsurprisingly, Barnwell came to the conclusion that Denver’s best chance is to include Surtain. However, even in that case, Payton and company would be living on a prayer because it isn’t anticipated that the Bears will trade the pick, much like Bon Jovi.
The Broncos nearly have to add players to go from No. 12 to No. 1 in the draft since they are already short on draft money from previous years and have several picks this year. Star cornerback Pat Surtain II, who may seem like a luxury on a defence that plays as much zone as the Bears, is the only player who could really make an impact.
Moreover, Chicago might not want to pay two cornerbacks as much as Surtain and Jaylon Johnson will collectively earn on their next deals, but it won’t hurt to get a top-three cornerback if Eberflus wants to have the greatest defence in the NFL.
Trade proposal: Surtain selection No. 12, along with second- and third-round picks in 2025, in exchange for the top pick.
