One would assume that most of the roles and positions on the Philadelphia Phillies 2023 roster are more or less set for the future season, given that the majority of the players are returning for the 2024 campaign.
Particularly when it comes to the Phillies’ bench, incumbents Jake Cave, Garrett Stubbs, Edmundo Sosa, and Cristian Pache all appear certain to make the big club. However, a few unproven but talented players could wish to weigh in on the team’s plans.
Here’s a closer look at five dark horse contenders who might contend for a bench spot on the team come Opening Day in 2024.
Clemens Kody
Following the season-ending injury to Rhys Hoskins, Kody Clemens played first base for the Phillies for the first three months of the previous campaign, mostly as a part-time player. Clemens did not fare well in his 47 games with the team, batting only.230 with a.644 OPS, four home runs, 13 RBI, and a 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Ultimately, Clemens was forced to return to the minor leagues when the Phillies made the decision to shift Bryce Harper to first base.
Still, Clemens’ unrealized power potential was revealed to the Phillies management when he proceeded to dominate minor league pitching for the remainder of the season. Ultimately, the slugger produced a strong.256 hit.937 OPS in 62 games with 10 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs, 52 RBI, and 51 runs scored. A huge three-home run game in the middle of August served as the cherry on top of his incredible run.
If Clemens has a strong spring, his versatility and newly acquired power—which allow him to play most infield positions in addition to the outfield—may be sufficient to get him a spot on the Opening Day roster.
