Two days before the customary signing day, Arizona State signed defensive back Kyan McDonald of Seattle (Wash.) O’Dea, a 2024 commitment.
Over the weekend, McDonald paid Tempe a formal visit and made his announcement on Monday.
Additionally, the Sun Devils now have their second O’Dea recruit for 2024 thanks to his pledge.
Jason Brown, a four-star running back for the Irish and McDonald’s teammate, inked a contract with the Sun Devils in December.
McDonald will now head to the desert to join his longtime teammate.
“The biggest reason for me was really the coaching staff, and the location,” McDonald stated. “Tempe, Arizona is a great place to stay or come back to after college is over.”
For him, the visit completed the deal.
“I knew it was the place for me when I got to talk to the players, and they said the same thing as my teammate Jason said to me, and that was that the coaches are the real deal and the the environment and culture is one of the best they’ve been around,” McDonald said.
Thus, he informed Kenny Dillingham, the head coach.
“I broke the news to coach Dillingham and he was fired up and rallied the coaches and players to give a round of applause, which was very much appreciated,” McDonald added.
His parents were equally ecstatic.
“My family’s reaction was a little more calm but they are very proud of me and happy that they get to come visit a sunnier state,” McDonald said.
McDonald claimed that a major deciding element in his choice was the Sun Devil coaching.
“The coaches definitely played a big part in my decision,” McDonald said. “I can definitely see myself having fun and getting to work at the same time with them.”
McDonald stated that the distance shouldn’t be too much of a problem, particularly since Arizona’s weather is getting better.
“Being away from home will definitely be a little tough, but I don’t think I’ll miss the weather,” McDonald stated.
And two days before signing day, with his future set, he’s prepared to focus on completing his senior year.
“Finding a home feels good,” McDonald remarked. “Now I can focus on finishing up high school and graduating with my brothers.”
