O’Connell will be on the team, but Garoppolo is virtually probably going to be cut, and Hoyer could retire or be released. It is unclear whether the Raiders would target a veteran or a rookie quarterback, but head coach Antonio Pierce said that the team will add a new quarterback to the roster this offseason.
“I think Aidan O’Connell put himself into a position that whoever we bring in, he should battle,” Pierce stated on the February 6 episode of the “Rich Eisen Show.” “I am all about competitiveness. It would take care of itself. Throughout the season, Aidan O’Connell excelled at managing the game, taking care of the football, and fulfilling our expectations. We made changes on offence. I’m sure, as you know, we’ll bring in a quarterback in some way and let those guys compete.”
The Raiders’ plans at quarterback are not surprising, but Pierce has confirmed them for the first time.
Antonio Pierce, who has only been coaching in the NFL for two years, discusses building his first coaching staff at this level. He’s been patient, and it helps that he was able to keep defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and the majority of the defensive staff.
“Keeping Patrick Graham was the key part,” Pierce stated in a February 8 editorial for The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “I am fired up and excited about that.”
The process of assembling the offensive staff has been lengthy, but the team has hired Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator. Pierce discussed the process of assembling his team.
“It takes patience and clear thoughts, not emotion,” Pierce stated in a February 8 essay by The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “A lot goes into it. The most important thing for me is to hire people who reflect the vision, mould, and mentality that I want our organization to have in the future. Above all, it must be about culture. Everyone has X’s and O’s — I’ve seen a thousand PowerPoints — but more importantly, how does that relate to our players and what we want to do in the future?”
Chad Johnson Chad Johnson, a former All-Pro wide receiver, was rumoured to be joining Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he did not join. Pierce even reacted, suggesting that Johnson might train wide receivers.
However, it was all a big joke between the two. ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez met with Johnson on February 7 and said that he is “just having some fun on social media.”
Johnson hasn’t coached in the NFL and is still a big star, so it’s understandable that he’s having a laugh with Pierce.
