According to Philadelphia Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski, the organization does not expect top prospect Andrew Painter to throw in any games during the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Dombrowski made the remarks on WIP Radio in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.
Dombrowski: “Painter’s rehabilitation is proceeding well…He’s just chucking at this point, as he should be. I don’t expect Andrew to pitch this year. I’m looking ahead to 2025. I suppose you might always be shocked, but I don’t want to put that burden on him.”
The hosts and Dombrowski also talked about a prospective Zack Wheeler extension, Bryce Harper’s contract situation, and much more. Read more here.
Painter’s injury is a devastating development for him. He was on track to make the roster out of spring training in 2023, but he ended up trying to rehab his elbow, which finally failed. He enters 2024 as the organization’s top prospect and the 27th overall in baseball.
The following is a section of his MLB.com prospect profile:
The fact that Painter is still considered as one of the finest pitching prospects in the league despite being on the sidelines speaks to his talent. His combination of stuff, stature, and pitching feel boosts his confidence, and he has a true four-pitch mix at his disposal. His fastball can reach triple digits and averaged around 96 mph at the end of 2022, and he also throws a sinking two-seamer and a high-spin four-seamer up in the zone. His slider is an out pitch in the low 80s with a lot of break and high spin rates. His upper-70s curve adds a unique aspect, and his above-average changeup has significantly improved.
