ESPN TRADE REPORT: Cowboys Has Completed a Blockbuster $96 Million Trade For NFL Best WR

According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine’s “hypothetical” trade proposal, the Cowboys would acquire Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs in return for their 2024 first-round selection pick, 2024 fifth-round pick, and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick.

Ballentine cites Trevon Diggs, Stefon’s brother, vouching for his elder brother to join him and the thought of the Cowboys combining Stefon with CeeDee Lamb as reasons why Dallas should consider making the move.

“Diggs’ younger brother—Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs—has openly campaigned for his brother to join him before,” Ballentine writes in his article. “If the receiver is motivated to make it happen, he may be willing to contribute monetarily. The transfer would not be inexpensive for Dallas, but pity the defence that must defend CeeDee Lamb and Diggs in the same offence. Dak Prescott would have a difficult time failing in the playoffs with an offence that included both of them.”

Why Potential Stefon Diggs Trade Makes Sense.
While combining two of the finest receivers in the NFL would undoubtedly make the Cowboys an even more dominant offensive unit, Diggs’ non-committal comments during the Pro Bowl this past weekend further strengthen the case for a trade.

Diggs, who has never been shy about expressing his dissatisfaction, did not seem very positive about the Bills’ future as a franchise.

Per ESPN’s Stephen Holder:

“I feel like I take it day by day,” he told me. “Obviously, there are many changes and events taking place. I can’t really put the cart before the horse, you know what I mean? But I have a tremendous offseason ahead of me to put in a lot of effort and build around what we have and are doing. I can’t tell you what the future holds, but I’m still being myself.

The fact that the Bills lost their third playoff game to the Kansas City Chiefs — Diggs has been a member of each of those teams — and Buffalo has failed to progress to the Super Bowl in each of his four seasons with the franchise may indicate Diggs is growing impatient.

Why the Cowboys Could Benefit from the Stefon Diggs Trade
While the Cowboys face a similar challenge in advancing in the playoffs — they haven’t reached a conference title game since 1995 — Diggs might be the person who propels them over the top.

The 30-year-old receiver is as productive as ever, with 107 grabs for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns. It was his fourth consecutive season with at least 100 receptions, 1,100 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns.

There’s little doubt that Diggs is as prolific and durable as ever. Diggs has missed only two games in the last four seasons and has never played fewer than 13 games in a single season.

The question is if Dallas is willing to trade with a first-round draft pick for Diggs. Diggs will sign a four-year, $96 million contract extension in 2024, with at least $18 million in base salary over the next three seasons. Diggs is the NFL’s sixth highest-paid receiver.

The Cowboys will soon sign Lamb to a large contract extension, and Dak Prescott might sign a new contract worth $50 million or more per year. Are they truly willing to assume Diggs’ contract through the 2027 season?

The prospect of having Lamb and Diggs on the same field is appealing. However, from a salary cap perspective, it makes little sense.
