JUST IN: Steelers Interviewing Three More Coaching Candidates

Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing their hunt for assistant coaches, bringing in three new candidates for open jobs. According to league sources, the team plans to interview Matt Baker, Mateo Kambui, and Phil Matusz for various positions.

Baker has a connection with the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, having worked as an assistant special teams coach for the Atlanta Falcons last season. Prior to Atlanta, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at John Carroll University after beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2010 and moving on to his next position as an analyst and quarterback coach for Western Michigan nine years later in 2019.

The North Carolina native also played quarterback in the NFL from 2006 to 2009, with the Buffalo Bills serving as his final two seasons home.

Kambui is also from Atlanta and will work as their assistant offensive line coach in 2023. Before joining Smith and the Falcons, he was a member of the Denver Broncos’ Marlin Briscoe Coaching Fellowship (2021-2022). He assisted in scouting and coaching the wide receivers.
Matusz is Boston College’s head strength and conditioning coach. The Steelers parted ways with both of their strength and conditioning coaches and have been interviewing a few prospects for the positions.

He has been with Boston College for four years. He previously worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Ohio State for six seasons before assisting the Eagles in developing elite NFL Draft prospects such as Zion Johnson and Zay Flowers.
So far, the Steelers have interviewed six candidates for coaching positions. Aside from Baker, Kambui, and Matusz, Pittsburgh has met/plans to meet with Los Angeles Chargers passing game specialist Tom Arth, Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach Charles London, and New York Jets wide receivers coach Zach Azzani.
