According to a new mock draft, the Denver Broncos will select a quarterback similar to Cincinnati Bengals standout Joe Burrow.
In his most recent mock draft, Josh Edwards of CBS Sports has the Broncos selecting Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy with the 12th overall choice. ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller says that some executives believe he would be a more valuable prospect if he played in a different offence.
“Every tool is there. “They’re just waiting to come out,” Miller remarked on “The Matt Barrie Show” Tuesday. “I’ve spoken with numerous scouts, one in particular, who stated that J.J. McCarthy would be Joe Burrow if he were on a team that threw the ball. J.J. McCarthy is a popular figure in the scouting industry. He’s tough as heck, has a strong arm, is an excellent athlete, and is coachable. That’s something that comes up frequently.
Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and the national championship after throwing for 60 touchdowns and 5,671 yards in his final season at LSU in 2019. In four seasons with the Bengals, he led the team to Super Bowl LVI and made the Pro Bowl.
McCarthy also led the Wolverines to a national championship, but his statistics pale in comparison. He threw for 22 touchdowns but did not reach 3,000 passing yards.
Burrow benefited from having wide receivers Justin Jefferson (Vikings) and Ja’Marr Chase (Bengals), both of whom became NFL stars. Still, the metrics imply McCarthy is less polished than Burrow, and he needs to improve his game.
Regardless, the Broncos must select a quarterback in the draft. Russell Wilson will most likely be released this offseason. Jarrett Stidham, the backup, was 1-1 in two starts with a 31 QBR, which is below average.
McCarthy definitely has some potential that head coach Sean Payton cannot ignore. If the Broncos take a chance on him, it’s not altogether unreasonable.
