What the Washington Commanders do with their No. 2 overall choice is rather puzzling. With a plethora of talented quarterbacks available, Washington’s decision on draft day will be interesting. However, the hire of Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator may have given us an idea of where the team stands. Kingsbury was USC’s senior offensive analyst in 2023. Why is this important? Well, Washington now has someone who is quite familiar with Caleb Williams’ game and skill set. As a result, CBS Sports has the Commanders trading up to No. 1 and acquiring Williams to lead the franchise.
“The Commanders take the bold step of pairing Williams with Kliff Kingsbury in the nation’s capital. CBS Sports reports that new owner Josh Harris has put his signature on his team.
Since the Commanders secured the No. 2 pick, it has been clear that a quarterback will be selected. However, with Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels all projected to enter the draft early, Washington’s strategy was unknown. We believe the Kingsbury hire has made it a little less unknown.
While it is difficult to forecast these things, given that the Chicago Bears might easily reject any trade offers from the Commanders and choose Williams themselves, they must first deal with Justin Field. The Commanders have no such concerns about Sam Howell, who is expected to serve as the backup to whatever quarterback arrives in the nation’s capital.
