With the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason beginning early, players are taking the opportunity to address any lingering injuries from the 2023 season. ESPN’s Todd Archer said that TE Peyton Hendershot, G T.J. Bass, and CB Stephon Gilmore underwent surgery shortly after the season ended against the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs.
Gilmore is the player to watch, given his performance in his debut season as a Cowboy. He’s a free agent, so if the front office decides to bring him back, Gilmore’s recuperation period would be the longest, at four to six months.
He tore his labrum in Week 18 against the Washington Commanders and played through the injury in the Wild Card game. Because of Gilmore’s injury, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn decided to use a heavier zone coverage approach against the Packers.
Bass and Hendershot had minor roles in 2023, but both have bright futures with Dallas as players the franchise aims to develop. Hendershot went on injured reserve a few weeks into the season due to an ankle ailment. He fought to return before the end of the season, but his injury was severe enough to have surgery.
Fans are thrilled about Bass after seeing him in spot duty at left and right guard. The undrafted rookie might be a starter along the offensive line if Zack Martin retires in a few seasons, Tyler Smith moves to left tackle, or the coaches choose to try him at centre.
If Gilmore signs a new contract with Dallas, all three players should be healthy by September 1st, assuming rehab goes well.
