According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Washington Commanders are slated to employ former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson to round out their coaching staff. According to Fowler, Johnson will play a significant role on the offensive staff.
Fowler, 36, met with the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New Orleans Saints, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
Philadelphia scored the seventh most points per game (24.6), was 17th in passing yards per game, and ninth in rushing yards. The difficulty, however, was that the Eagles’ offence turned cold in the final few weeks of the season. They only scored nine points in their Wild Card Round encounter against the Buccaneers. Johnson must be imaginative because the Commanders’ offence lacks the talent of the Eagles.
According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, Jalen Hurts was upset with the offence.
“On top of those challenges, Jalen Hurts’ intended path for the offence has yet to materialize, which has disappointed the franchise quarterback, according to a source with intimate knowledge of Hurts’ thinking. According to the source, a disconnect between Sirianni, Hurts, and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson’s visions has hampered the offense’s ability to establish an identity.
After a 10-1 start and a Super Bowl appearance the year before, everything appeared to be going well in Philadelphia. However, they went 1-5 entering the playoffs and lost to a Buccaneers team that isn’t as talented as they were. A collapse like this cannot happen to the Commanders.
Johnson took a much of the blame, but there were numerous other reasons why this offence wasn’t terrific, including Hurts’ career-high number of interceptions and rushing for about 200 yards fewer than he did in 2022.
Commanders’ Offence Must Improve by 2024
The Washington Commanders finished 26th in running yards per game, 19th in throwing yards per game, and 25th in points per game. As an offensive unit, they couldn’t have been worse. Given the probability of a rookie quarterback starting next season, things may not get much better.
However, Kliff Kingsbury, the Commanders’ new offensive coordinator, and Johnson will have to turn this thing around. An offence that ranks in the bottom 15 in every key category is absolutely unacceptable for a team that recruited Terry McLaurin, Brian Robinson Jr., and others.
They can enhance their offence and become a better squad. It is unclear whether they will trade with the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 pick, but they are expected to draft a quarterback at No. 2.
Players have been impressed by the commander’s moves.
Some players around the league have shared their thoughts on the Commanders’ recent signings, notably Micah Parsons, probably the best defensive player in football.
Parsons played for the Dallas Cowboys, and Dan Quinn was the defensive coordinator. According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, Parsons responded to the Washington Commanders’ choice to hire Quinn as follows.
“I would say it was already a competitive division,” Parsons said about the NFC East. “He’s just adding another element to it. He’s going to turn that Commander’s team around, and I’m quite thrilled to face him.”
