Veteran forward James Johnson has re-signed with the Pacers, according to a press release. Johnson’s second 10-day deal with Indiana expired on Wednesday night.
As expected, veteran point guard Cory Joseph was cut, making room on the 15-man roster for Johnson. Indiana acquired Joseph from Golden State earlier today for $5.68 million in cash.
Johnson has signed four different contracts with Indiana since the 2023-24 season began. He signed a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal on December 15, but it was dropped to allow the trade for Pascal Siakam a month later. Johnson returned to the Pacers on two 10-day contracts and, now that he is unable to sign another 10-day contract, has agreed to a rest-of-season contract with the team.
Johnson, who turns 37 later this month, has played only 24 minutes in five outings for the Pacers this season. However, he is a valuable veteran presence in the locker room, adding toughness and physicality to a youthful club.
Johnson’s prorated minimum-salary contract will pay him $1,230,816 the rest of the way and count toward Indiana’s $777,703 maximum.
The Pacers currently have a complete 15-man roster, but they are anticipated to clear a spot by dismissing Furkan Korkmaz, who was acquired from Philadelphia on Thursday.
