The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that Brandon Marsh has had knee surgery. Spring training begins next week, and the Phillies’ outfield roster depth will be tested early in the season.
The 24-year-old will be out for three to four weeks, according to a team statement. According to this timeframe, Marsh may make his spring training debut in mid-March. The left-knee arthroscopic debridement operation is Marsh’s most recent injury.
Marsh has had a sprained ankle, shoulder irritation, and a damaged left knee since joining the Phillies, which landed him on the 10-day injured list in August.
According to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Marsh felt the problem when working out a few days ago. While the injury is understood to have occurred recently, Dave Dombrowski made no mention of Marsh’s knee condition during a recent appearance on SportsRadio 94WIP.
How will Marsh’s injury affect Philadelphia’s outfield situation?
The absence of Brandon Marsh provides a dilemma for the team’s outfield, which lacks major league-ready depth. Símon Muzziotti was just designated for assignment. If Marsh experiences any setbacks in his recovery, the Phillies will most likely go with a less-than-desirable platoon of Kyle Schwarber, Jake Cave, and Cristian Pache in left field, unless they are forced to make a move for one of the available free agent outfielders on the market.
With worries about how Johan Rojas’ bat will develop at the major league level, the timing of this setback will focus more attention on the kid and how his hitting has improved since his disastrous performance at the plate during the postseason, when he appeared absolutely outmatched. Rojas is expected to be the starting centre fielder to begin the season, so a successful spring training at the plate is critical.
Could Brandon Marsh’s injury be the catalyst for the Phillies to make a late push for a free agency outfielder? That has now become a strong possibility.
