Despite practicing this week, Prince Tega Wanogho, a former Auburn offensive tackle, will not be activated from injured reserve and will miss Super Bowl LVIII.
On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that Wanogho and guard Joe Thuney would not play in the 2023 NFL Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Thuney, a first-team All-Pro at left guard this season, suffered a pectoral injury in Kansas City’s 27-24 win against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC playoffs’ second round on Jan. 21. He did not play in the Chiefs’ 17-10 win against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 28.
Thuney didn’t practice this week, but Wanogho did. He returned to practice on Jan. 24, but Kansas City has decided not to reinstate him to the active roster following a quadriceps injury that ended his season.
Wanogho is the lone former Auburn player on the rosters for Super Bowl LVIII teams. With Wanogno unable to play, Auburn’s eight-year streak of having an alumnus play in the Super Bowl will come to an end. It’s the longest streak in Tigers history.
Wanogho has been on injured reserve since September 27 after suffering a quadriceps rupture in a 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears on September 24.
Wanogho, a sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, is in his third season with the Chiefs. The former Edgewood Academy standout was a backup but appeared in every game last season as Kansas City won Super Bowl LVII.
This season, Wanogho was the Chiefs’ swing tackle. He had two offensive snaps in the first two games. Against the Bears, the Edgewood Academy alumnus played a series for right tackle Jawaan Taylor before taking over for left tackle Donvoan Smith. He had 14 offensive snaps and seven special-teams plays in the game before getting hurt.
