Twenty24 will see quarterbacks dominate the NFL draft once more, but it won’t just be the incoming prospects who grab the most attention. The league’s Annual Selection Meeting will be greatly impacted by the expected departure of two experienced signal-callers, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
I predict that in my three-round mock draft, the Bears will pass on Fields and choose USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick. Fields is sent to New England by the Bears, per my prediction. The Patriots and Chicago would trade first-round selections this year, along with a 2024 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2025 pick. This transaction would be comparable to the Packers and Jets’ acquisition of Aaron Rodgers from last year. Additionally, I predict that Wilson will leave the Broncos before the 2019–20 season and that Atlanta would sign the veteran upon his release. Wilson got a contract extension prior to the 2022 season, which will probably preclude a move. The agreement also included a no-trade clause.
A quarterback carousel that would draw crowds at Coney Island would result from adding five soon-to-be rookies who find new homes in the top 33 selections.
At the conclusion of this mock draft’s third round, seven compensatory picks are anticipated. Based on projections from Over the Cap, the first four are given to teams that lose 2023 free agents. The last three represent expected salary gains for teams that hire minority candidates for head coach/general manager positions after they were passed over by the Rams, 49ers, and Buccaneers.
