BREAKING NEWS: Chiefs Superstar On Texans Free Agency Radar and Houston currently sits with more than $59 million of effective cap space

Few organizations have more flexibility and capital going into the 2024 offseason than the Houston Texans. There will be even fewer who can afford to bring in a proven superstar. Fortunately for the Texans, they are undoubtedly one of those teams. And, as it happens, one of the top players in today’s NFL is going to enter the open market, filling a critical need for Houston in 2024.
We’re talking about Chris Jones, the Kansas City Chiefs standout and three-time Super Bowl champion.

Houston presently has more than $59 million in effective cap space, trailing just the Tennessee Titans ($65.75 million) and the Washington Commanders ($62.59 million) entering the free agency period. In other words, the Texans will be able to throw money at almost anyone they want, including Jones, who is expected to receive a four-year contract worth between $120 million and $140 million ($30 million to $35 million APY), with more than $100 million guaranteed. Of course, the Chiefs could franchise tag Jones, but given that his guaranteed salary would be more than $33 million for just one season, that appears doubtful. Especially given that he will only be returning to the market in 2025. So, could the Texans genuinely participate in the conversation?
One may argue that they have as good a chance of landing him as anyone. Only three of the 11 clubs with adequate cap room to sign Jones for $30 million or more made the playoffs: the Texans, the Lions, and the Buccaneers. However, one could argue that of the three clubs, the Texans have by far the most promising future.

Houston not only has a young superstar in the developing at quarterback, but they also have one at the second most crucial position on the roster: edge rusher, Will Anderson.
They also have Laremy Tunsil, probably the finest left tackle in the NFL, bright young talent at the skill positions, and high-potential young building stones at nearly every position group on the roster. The only exception is at defensive tackle, where Jones could quickly transform the Texans’ defensive front into one of the most frightening in the NFL. And possibly, if they make the correct moves during the rest of the offseason, propel them into legitimate Super Bowl contention.
