ESPN TRADE NEWS: GOOD NEWS- TEXANS ARE REPORTEDLY ON THE VERGE TO LAND CHIEFS STANDOUT AND A THREE TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPION TOP STAR IN FREE AGENCY HAVING REACHED A CONTARCT AGREEMENT

Few organizations have more flexibility and capital going into the 2024 offseason than the Houston Texans. There will be even fewer who can afford to bring in a proven superstar. Fortunately for the Texans, they are undoubtedly one of those teams. And, as it happens, one of the top players in today’s NFL is going to enter the open market, filling a critical need for Houston in 2024. We’re talking about Chris Jones, the Kansas City Chiefs standout and three-time Super Bowl champion.

Houston presently has more than $59 million in effective cap space, trailing just the Tennessee Titans ($65.75 million) and the Washington Commanders ($62.59 million) entering the free agency period. In other words, the Texans will be able to throw money at almost anyone they want, including Jones, who is expected to receive a four-year contract worth between $120 million and $140 million ($30 million to $35 million APY), with more than $100 million guaranteed. Of course, the Chiefs could franchise tag Jones, but given that his guaranteed salary would be more than $33 million for just one season, that appears doubtful.

Especially given that he will only be returning to the market in 2025. So, could the Texans genuinely participate in the conversation One may argue that they have as good a chance of landing him as anyone. Only three of the 11 clubs with adequate cap room to sign Jones for $30 million or more made the playoffs: the Texans, the Lions, and the Buccaneers. However, one could argue that of the three clubs, the Texans have by far the most promising future.
