The approaching free agency of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is already shaping up as one of the more intriguing stories in the NFL season. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton may have added to the tension when asked ahead of Super Bowl 58 which player he believes is “unfairly hated.” That’s when the Broncos’ mentor mentioned Mayfield’s name.
“I’m sure Baker [Mayfield] was one of them, and then what happened? The narrative shifts, and we’re all like, “Oh, we love Baker now.” Aren’t we looking for Baker? I mean, where is he? He’s a free agent, you know.
At this point, it is safe to say that the Denver Broncos’ gamble on Russell Wilson was a massive failure. The Broncos traded A LOT for Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 before signing him to a hefty five-year contract extension worth 242.5 million, believing he had enough power to put Denver in serious Super Bowl contention in the coming years. That appears to be incorrect, as the Denver Broncos have won only 13 games in Wilson’s two seasons and have made no playoff appearances.
Is Baker Mayfield the Denver Broncos’ saviour?
With Wilson not working out for the Broncos, the team is in need of a quarterback. That is, unless the Broncos opt to stick with Wilson or trust Jarrett Stidham. The offseason provides an opportunity for the Broncos to address their quarterback concerns. It is unclear how interested Payton and the Broncos are in pursuing Mayfield, but the former No. 1 overall selection pick has certainly rebuilt his image as a legitimate NFL starter following one season with the Bucs.
