The Seattle Seahawks should consider acquiring a dual-threat quarterback.
According to Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski, the Seahawks “should” consider dealing for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Although Geno Smith is currently the Seahawks’ main quarterback, the team has barely gone above.500 in his two seasons as starter, according to Sobleski.
While the Seahawks may need to make a move to acquire the assets required to complete a deal for Fields, Sobleski believes it is something they should investigate.
“Clearly, the Seahawks don’t need to press the matter since they have an established starter (Smith),” Sobleski says in his article. “At the proper price, all options should be examined. Seattle may contemplate trading down in the first round and using the extra assets to finalize a deal for Fields. As a result of the Leonard Williams trade, the Seahawks no longer have a second-round pick. Some work is required, but the possibility should be considered. Fields would benefit significantly from having a good wide receiver corps like the Seahawks’.”
Why the Bears Might Trade Justin Fields.
Fields is the most frequently mentioned name in trade rumours leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft. That is because the Bears, who have the first pick in the draft, may select USC quarterback Caleb Williams and trade Fields. Alternatively, they can keep him and choose a wide receiver or offensive lineman to supplement his production.
Nonetheless, Fields’ great finish to the 2023 season does not guarantee his return to the Bears. Fields finished 4-2 in his past six games, totaling seven touchdowns, three interceptions, and 316 rushing yards.
Having said that, if the Bears exercise his fifth-year option, Fields will earn $22 million in 2025. That doesn’t take into account the high expense of signing Fields to a new contract. According to Spotrac, Fields’ market value averages $47.1 million per season over six years, totaling more than $283.1 million. That would make Fields the league’s sixth-highest paid quarterback.
If that’s the case, it makes more sense for the Bears to trade Fields and draft Williams as a far cheaper replacement than to keep the explosive 24-year-old for a fourth season.
Why the Seahawks Could Trade for Justin Fields.
Smith has performed admirably in his two seasons as starter following Russell Wilson’s trade. He led Seattle to a surprise playoff participation in 2022 and was on the verge of a second consecutive postseason bid. Smith did, however, regress statistically — 2o touchdowns and 92.1 passing rating in 2023 compared to 30 touchdowns and 100.9 passer rating in 2022 — and with Mike Macdonald as the new head coach, he may be inclined to move in a different path at quarterback.
It may also make sense to dismiss Smith, who has two years remaining on his contract, and save $13.2 million in the process. If the Seahawks keep Smith, they will be responsible for his $22.5 million salary in 2024.
If the Seahawks want to make a big impact, they could look into a move for Fields. It would certainly necessitate giving up draft money, but if Seattle believes Fields can take them to the next level with the receiving talent they already have — DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon-Smith Njigba — they could make the deal.
