This offseason, the Chicago Bears will most likely trade Justin Fields. The question now is more about the return and which team will make the trade once everything is said and done. Teams likely to trade for Fields include the typical suspects, but the New York Giants are an undervalued team.
Are the New York Giants interested in trading for Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears?
On the surface, the Giants would be unlikely to trade for a quarterback after signing a large agreement that will pay him $47 million in 2024. However, the Giants face a unique position. Jones did nothing last year to justify such a high pay, and the injury hampered his progress even more. So they can’t trust his play, but they also have concerns about his health.
The Giants desperately needed a backup quarterback last season. Tyrod Taylor made $6.9 million last year and is now a free agent. This year, if they traded for Justin Fields, the cap charge would be $6 million. As a result, the Giants would make the backup less expensive than the previous year while simultaneously increasing competition.
Fields and Jones could push each other, and while the money would be different, the competitiveness would be equal. If Fields wins the job, the Giants might choose to exercise his fifth-year option, tag him, or work out a deal for next season. Meanwhile, releasing Jones after this season may save them $19.4 million in cap space. That money could go directly to Fields, while the budget for the quarterback room would stay same. A coaching staff that has previously turned things around with Jones must believe Fields has more potential.
In an ideal world, the Giants wouldn’t need a backup quarterback after paying Jones so much. Last year was not perfect, and now a perfect scenario is Fields and Jones competing for that $19 million in 2025.
