Rumours persist that the Philadelphia Phillies are looking for a big addition in the free agent market before the new season begins. Whether it’s Cody Bellinger, Jordan Montgomery, or one of the remaining eligible players, the Phillies have plenty of alternatives if they want to bring someone in. Whit Merrifield, a lesser-known talent, was allegedly one of the front office’s favourites. Philadelphia is rumoured to be seeking for a fourth outfielder this summer, but has struggled to attract anyone on the market since they cannot promise playing time.
Jake Cave and Cristian Pache join Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Johan Rojas, who are expected to be their starters. Merrifield was named an All-Star for the third time in his career last year with the Toronto Blue Jays. In 145 games, he batted.272/.318/.382, with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs. He also split time between the outfield and infield with the Blue Jays, making him one of the greatest utility players on the market.
At 35 years old, it’s unknown what type of contract he’s hoping for, but MLB insider Jon Morosi writes that his market has begun to heat up, with five teams showing interest, and a decision might be made by the end of this weekend. That timeframe makes sense for Merrifield since he wants to come to Spring Training as soon as possible and begin working with his new teammates and coaching staff. It’s unknown whether the Phillies are one of the five clubs vying for the veteran outfielder, but given their need for depth, this decision will be closely monitored.
