Will these three Hurricanes transfers improve the team in 2024?
Miami filled some significant gaps in the Transfer Portal with seasoned players.
Ward was Miami’s primary quarterback option from the minute he arrived from Washington State in December. The Hurricanes were able to sign the 6-2, 223-pound signal caller after he had stated his intention to pursue the NFL Draft. Last year, he passed for 3,735 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
-Powell is an addition that we probably don’t discuss enough. The graduate transfer will bring experience to Miami’s safety corps, which just lost top prospects Kam Kinchens and James Williams to the NFL draft. Powell started 14 games for the Washington Huskies last season, including the CFP national title game. He had three interceptions last season and returned one of them 89 yards for a touchdown.
-Alston should significantly improve the Hurricanes’ already powerful pass rush. He has six sacks, an interception, and two forced fumbles at Marshall last season. Alston should hit the ground running at Miami, where he will reunite with Lance Guidry, his Thundering Herd DC from two seasons ago.
Others not included in Thomas’ essay will likely make important contributions as transfers next season. Centre Zach Carpenter will undoubtedly start. I expect transfer DT CJ Clark to take up the starting position left vacant by NFL-bound Leonard Taylor. Safety Savion Riley will have the opportunity to start next to Powell.
Miami has made nine transfers and now ranks 33rd in the 247Sports portal rankings. The portal will reopen on April 15th, allowing Miami the opportunity to add players again if they like. Wide receiver may be a position of need.
