Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has publicly backed coach Stefano Pioli and stated that he will only be content if the club wins the Champions League.
The RedBird CEO has continued to irritate supporters following his decision to fire directors Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara last summer, a move that significantly eroded fan-owner trust.
On the football, Milan’s dismal Champions League campaign and erratic league run mean they aren’t competing for the main prizes this season, raising questions about Pioli’s competence as manager. He is widely likely to be replaced near the end of the season.
Cardinale first addressed Milan’s Europa League victory over Stade Rennais in an interview with Corriere della Sera via Calciomercato.com.

“I’m really pleased with what I witnessed; matches like this boost the players’ confidence; they wanted it. Despite the several new members, the organization is making progress.
He publicly backed Pioli, emphasizing that everyone, including himself, must perform better for the club.
“We have undergone significant changes, and forming a cohesive team takes time. However, we are growing and approaching second place, and credit must be given to the players, staff, and coach. I’ll be satisfied if we win the Champions League.
“However, not being satisfied at a specific point does not always result in terminating the coach. I feel Pioli is doing a terrific job in a difficult circumstance, with a very rejuvenated staff, and I refuse to terminate someone simply to change something.
“I’ll say that the season is still lengthy, so anything may happen; we’ll see. We need to improve in several areas, including injury management. Everyone, beginning with me, needs to improve their performance. But I’m not leaving; I’ll be here for a long time. “No one wants to win more than me.”
Cardinale was unequivocal in his response to speculations of a potential purchase by Saudi financiers.
“I want to be clear: it is entirely false. I’m planning to stay for a long period because I have a task to do. I am devoted to returning Milan to the top of Serie A and Europe, and I will not stop until I achieve these goals.
“And after we’ve reached them, I’ll want to do it again. I feel terrible for the fans because they are persuaded to believe in an instability that does not exist by speculating about fictitious changes in the corporate structure.
“I don’t let myself be sidetracked and stay focused on what I need to do. Take the example of the vendor loan signed with Elliott; I wanted it since Elliott did an excellent job. Nobody held a pistol to my head. You can disagree with my strategies, but I did not invent them.
“I’m an expert in corporate finance; assuming that 18 months after these decisions, I’m having problems is absurd. It would be preferable to spark conversations about how to restore Serie A as a reference league, or the significance of modern stadiums for clubs.”
Finally, Cardinale reviewed Milan’s new stadium proposal, which is progressing slowly.
“I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made in 18 months to create the first new stadium in Italy since 2011, with 70,000 seats.
“Reconsider San Siro? I don’t think so at this stage, but every alternative is worth considering.
