Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl says star guard Jaylin Williams has a knee injury after seeming to injure himself while attempting a dunk in No. 13 Auburn’s 70-59 loss to No. 22 Kentucky on Saturday.
“Yeah, he’s hurt,” Pearl stated on Auburn’s postgame radio broadcast. “He is harmed. “We don’t know what it will be.”
Pearl stated that Williams will get an MRI tomorrow. During the radio show, Pearl referenced Williams’ meniscus, but she wasn’t sure if that was what was hurt.
“We were in range when he got hurt,” Pearl explained. “We think he must have something. We think it is something like “not just a bang.”
Williams went up for a thunderous slam with just over 10 minutes left in the second half. With Kentucky defenders in the area, the play was tough from the start.
However, as he approached the ground, he collided with a Kentucky defender and collapsed on his right knee, which looked to flex unnaturally as Williams’ foot impacted the ground.
Williams’ progress this season has been a huge component of Auburn’s success. He is a valuable leader on this team and the most successful player in program history.
Williams left the game with three points on 1-5 shooting. He is averaging a career-high 13.4 points per game this season.
Auburn is now 20-6 overall and 9-4 in the SEC.
