Bryan McClendon, Georgia’s wide receiver coach, recently announced that he was leaving the team to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their wide receiver coach and pass game coordinator. The Bulldogs are now looking for a new wide receiver coach after McClendon only stayed with the club for two seasons. The question now is, who could Georgia potentially hire. Spring practice is swiftly approaching, thus head coach Kirby Smart is likely to want to fill the vacancy as soon as possible. With that in mind, here is a list of people that Georgia might potentially appoint as the next wide receivers coach at the University of Georgia:
Jimmie Smith Smith is currently the associate head coach at the University of Arkansas under former Georgia coach Sam Pittman, having previously worked as the running backs coach for several seasons. Smith has greatly aided the Razorbacks’ running back room, both on the recruiting trail and on the field. He was born in Darlington, South Carolina, but has family roots in Georgia. Smith worked at Cedar Grove High School from 2007 to 2018, beginning as an assistant coach, then as offensive coordinator, and finally as head coach for six seasons. The current SEC coach is a well-known position coach and recruiter in the SEC, with impressive results at his previous stops. A collection of characteristics that might blend in well in a place like Georgia.
Josh Crawford Crawford is currently the wide receivers coach at Georgia Tech and is set to begin his second year there. He has strong ties to Georgia, having previously coached at Colquitt, Jefferson, and Valdosta high schools. Crawford spent two seasons at Western Kentucky before joining the Yellow Jackets, serving as the outside wide receivers coach one year and co-offensive coordinator the next while still coaching wide receivers. Crawford’s receivers at Western Kentucky totaled 10,339 receiving yards and 94 touchdowns over two seasons. Another interesting fact about Crawford is that if Georgia hired him, he would already be familiar with the offensive system. Buster Faulkner, Georgia Tech’s offensive coordinator, spent several seasons as the Bulldogs’ quality control and quarterbacks coach before obtaining his current position. James Coley A name that Georgia fans are familiar with, and while his tenure as offensive coordinator may not be remembered fondly, there is no denying his success as a coach on the recruiting road throughout the years. He was recently appointed as South Carolina’s wide receivers coach after previously coaching at Texas A&M, where he coached tight ends, wide receivers, and served as co-offensive coordinator for a season. He has consistently recruited at a high level in the SEC, something the Bulldogs may utilize at wide receiver. Another name to keep an eye on is Dameyune Craig.
He is another former Texas A&M wide receiver coach who spent the previous six seasons with the Aggies but was not hired by new head coach Mike Elko. Craig has coached at both the collegiate and NFL levels, including stints at LSU and Auburn, where he assisted with wide receivers. It’s also worth highlighting two fan favourites. Hines Ward and Terrance Edwards, both former Georgia wide receivers, remain in the mix while the Bulldogs are looking for a new wide receiver coach. Edwards recently accepted a head coaching position at Mount Vernon High School after previously working at Milton High School. Ward was most recently the head coach of the San Antonio football squad in the XFL. Both are Georgia legends, and if the Bulldogs choose to bring in
