The Seattle Seahawks are considering cutting Tyler Lockett this summer. The three-time All-Pro wideout is a potential cap casualty because he will have a $27.8 million salary charge and will turn 32 in September.
With Mike Macdonald ushering in a new era for the Seattle Seahawks, we wouldn’t be surprised if they let go of some key veterans, beginning with Lockett.
The former Kansas State Wildcat is under contract with the team until 2025, but he has an out option for 2024, which he might use to test the open market.
Tyler Lockett of the Seattle Seahawks is showing signs of decline.
Tyler Lockett is now the Seattle Seahawks’ longest-tenured player. Lockett has been one of Seattle’s most reliable wide receivers over the past nine seasons, but he is coming off a subpar year in 2023.
Lockett failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2018, with only 894 yards on 79 receptions and five receiving touchdowns, and he did not have a single 100-yard game in 2023.
However, if he does depart the Seattle Seahawks this summer, he will have suitors because he still has something in the tank, and recent reports have him linked with a move to the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.
“Houston already has the long-term quarterback with C.J. Stroud, so the Texans won’t be starting over like the Patriots,” Lee Vowell noted in an email. “Lockett would be going to a team where he would be helping a young quarterback, but he also wouldn’t be the only receiver who could be productive, and Houston can pay Lockett top-dollar.”
Jaxon Smith-Njigba will be the Seattle Seahawks’ No. 2 receiver if Tyler Lockett goes.
Tyler Lockett’s upcoming departure will create a significant chance for Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who will be the Seattle Seahawks’ second-best wide receiver after DK Metcalf, who is unlikely to be dealt this summer.
In his first NFL season, the 22-year-old caught 63 passes for 628 yards and four touchdowns. In their 20-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7, Jaxon Smith-Njigba filled in for DK Metcalf, who was sidelined for the first time in his NFL career due to a rib injury.
Smith-Njigba also recorded game-winning touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15.
