Auburn women’s basketball seeks to pick up huge SEC wins this week as the season comes to a close. Auburn split last week’s games, defeating Kentucky at home and falling on the road to Alabama, as the Tigers prepare for rematches with LSU and Texas A&M.
The Tigers will continue their road trip to Baton Rouge to face No. 13 LSU in their second meeting of the season. LSU suffered its first conference loss of the season, 67-62, to Auburn in January.
Auburn will then return home for a rematch with Texas A&M. The Aggies defeated Auburn, 66-44, in their first conference away game. According to ESPN’s Bracketology, this contest pits two teams on the verge of making the tournament, with both teams ranked as one of the final four.
Prior to these matchups, Auburn defeated Kentucky 78-50 on Thursday. A few days later, the Tigers travelled to Alabama on Sunday, where they led 52-42 entering the fourth quarter. This lead did not hold, as Alabama outscored the Tigers 25-9 in the fourth quarter to capture the game.
The LSU Tigers recently played the Texas A&M Aggies, with LSU winning 81-58.
Texas A&M will host Arkansas on Thursday before travelling to Neville Arena.
Players To Watch
Auburn’s JaMya Mingo-Young
While Honest Scott-Grayson’s spectacular scoring has been the topic of Auburn women’s basketball, Mingo-Young has gone unnoticed as a versatile guard.
Auburn’s second-leading scorer has had three games of double-digit scoring, including one double-double, averaging 11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game over that span.
The Tigers and Scott-Grayson will need to continue to rely on the surrounding cast and their backup, Mingo-Young, to get the job done on both sides of the floor.
LSU’s Aneesah Morrow
Like Auburn, the Bayou Bengals’ best player, Angel Reese, receives the most attention, but Morrow’s exploits this season should not be overlooked. Morrow has racked up 15 double-doubles in her last 20 games, averaging 17.6 points and 10.1 rebounds.
Morrow had 12 points and 15 rebounds in a defeat against Auburn earlier this season, shooting 54.5% from the field. With the season winding down, LSU will aim to finish strong and will require better two-way play from Morrow.
Texas A&M’s Aicha Coulibaly
The former Auburn Tiger returns to Neville Arena, wearing white and maroon. Coulibaly played at Auburn for three seasons and was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2022–23.
The Aggies’ second-leading scorer is part of a balanced offence that includes four players averaging double-digit points. Coulibaly has the lowest points per game since her freshman year at Auburn (12.6), but she shoots a career-high 51.4 percent from the field.
In her previous game against Auburn, she scored 14 points and collected five rebounds. She must continue to contribute efficient scoring to help her side qualify for the playoffs.
Auburn will seek to get back on track against LSU on Thursday, February 22, at 8 p.m. CST on the SEC Network. The Tigers will then return home to face the Aggies on Sunday, February 25, at 2 p.m. CST on SEC Network+.
