The Bears admired Montez Sweat’s ability to pressure passers, but when offensive lines overplayed him, it became problematic.
They know they don’t want to blitz 22.2% of the time again, which Sportsradar ranked as the 21st highest blitz rate by any of Matt Eberflus’ six NFL defences.
That is why Eric Washington, the new defensive coordinator, stated that it would be the end.
“We’d like to be—we’re going to be—a team that generates pressure with our front four,” he remarked. “We are going to create the best pass rush in sports. That happens to be an area, thankfully, where I’ve had great success, and we have the personnel to get it done.”
He will most likely require further assistance to complete this task. It won’t all be in the draft. Some could, but there are other options in free agency besides spending $35 million on Chris Jones.
