The Cincinnati Bengals’ 2023 NFL season was a disappointing one, as it appeared doomed when superstar quarterback Joe Burrow hurt his calf during training camp, just before signing a huge contract extension with the organization.
Cincinnati isn’t the same squad without Burrow at quarterback, as evidenced by his absence throughout the 2023 NFL regular season, but they expect him to return healthy and ready to play in 2024.
However, one major uncertainty remained as the NFL offseason began: the future of star wide receiver Tee Higgins.
Now, speculation over Higgins’ immediate future with the Bengals may be put to rest, as the organization did not hesitate when asked what they would do with their franchise tag this season.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bengals have informed Higgins that he will be assigned a franchise tag.
As a result of the Bengals slapping a franchise tag on Higgins, the 25-year-old wide receiver will earn $21.8 million in the 2024 NFL season.
That’s an outstanding total for a man who appeared in only 12 games this season and fell short of the 1,000-yard receiving mark, ending with 42 catches for 656 yards and five touchdowns.
Although Higgins lacks the talent of Bengals colleague Ja’Marr Chase, he remains an important piece of the jigsaw in Cincinnati, and the team realized it couldn’t afford to lose him this offseason.
