Due to injuries and inconsistent play in the first two years of the Kenny Pickett era, the Pittsburgh Steelers may decide to replace him this offseason. Although there has been some talk about Pittsburgh as a possible trade destination for Justin Fields, the Steelers still have another option to acquire a new signal-caller, and that option could still involve the Chicago Bears. The Steelers make a major move up the board in the most recent CBS Sports NFL mock draft of 2024, trading up from the No. 20 pick inside the top 10 and switching places with the Bears to choose Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the No. 9 pick.
Although the exact nature of the compensation involved in this arrangement is unknown, the Steelers believe it is improbable. Although they should upgrade at quarterback given their current circumstances, it doesn’t appear like this particular team would trade up into the top 10 for the class’s fourth-best passer at this time.
McCarthy played in a run-heavy offence that seldom ever required him to use his arm to win games, so while he has demonstrated glimpses of potential and clearly enjoyed plenty of team success, he is still unproven as a passer. The Steelers’ top pick this year appears to be more likely to go to a cornerback or offensive lineman; they may have to move up a few positions to select their top talent, like they did with offensive tackle Broderick Jones last year.
It’s also difficult to see the Bears pulling off this trade, given that in this mock draft, Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze was still available when they made the decision to take a significant drop down to the No. 20 pick. The opportunity to acquire another outstanding pass-catcher to complement D.J. Moore would be more important than whatever they would receive in exchange for trading down from the Steelers, regardless of whether they decide to keep Fields or use the first overall pick on USC quarterback Caleb Williams (as they do in this scenario).
