After finishing last year in the lower half of the AFC South, the Houston Texans shocked everyone by winning the division last season. The executive office needs to think about bringing in linebacker Khalil Mack, a $141 million player with a ton of potential, to keep the momentum going.
The Texans exceeded all expectations despite having low expectations going into the season because of C.J. Stroud’s remarkable run. They haven’t had a winning record and haven’t advanced to the postseason since 2019.
Leading the way were the team’s rookie quarterback and head coach, C.J. Stroud and DeMarco Ryans, respectively. Together, they made Houston the fifth club in NFL history with a first-year quarterback and coach to reach the postseason.
As the Texans eliminated the two, heads turned to see how they fared against the Cleveland Browns in the wild card round. Furthermore, many had already acknowledged their amazing run, even if they ultimately fell to the Baltimore Ravens in the next round.
Why the Houston Texans Should Sign Khalil Mack for the upcoming season
Mack’s contract with the Los Angeles Chargers is not mandatory, despite the fact that it would negatively impact their cap space. According to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, Houston is a better fit for the linebacker for the upcoming campaign:
Mack, who turned 33 this past season, recorded 17 sacks for the Chargers, and he would be signing a big contract. The Chargers are about $46 million above the limit for 2024, and he has a $38.5 million cap figure. Before June 1st, they could have saved almost $23 million in cap space by trading Mack.

e Texans have a cap space of $57 million. Additionally, since starting edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is about to enter free agency, they have room to add Mack. Imagine Mack lining up opposite Will Anderson Jr., making it impossible for opponents to double-team just one of them. The Texans would likely not have to give up a premium draft pick in exchange for a significant defensive upgrade, Schatz writes.
