With six picks in the first 102 of the 2024 NFL Draft and the most cap room in the NFL, Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters has plenty of options to fix a dismal offence from last season. Peters has the option of using his draft picks to upgrade positions in need. Heavy.com proposed a trade in which the Commanders would acquire Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb in exchange for a pair of mid-round picks.
“Given he’s coming off a second knee surgery, his price shouldn’t be too high,” the website argues. “For the Commanders, this is an excellent buy-low opportunity. A potential transaction might involve a 2024 fourth-round selection pick and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick. Given the injuries he’s experienced, determining his value is difficult. If Chubb was healthy, this deal might make sense. Adding a seasoned running back in a trade that does not cost any of the Commanders’ premium picks would not only strengthen the backfield, but would also provide the offence with a proven player who could open up the entire offensive scheme.
Chubb, 28, had ran for at least 995 yards and eight touchdowns in five consecutive seasons prior to last season. Chubb’s health is a major concern that cannot be overlooked. It wasn’t just any knee injury; it was one of the most horrible you’ll ever see, and it was the second time he’d suffered one in that way in his career. Running backs age faster than other positions, and a second catastrophic knee injury might effectively end Chubb’s career. Heavy.com also speculated that Chubb may be cut owing to his injury history and the Browns’ cap issue. If Chubb becomes a free agent, Washington would be better served waiting and possibly signing him to a one-year prove-it contract.
Brian Robinson Jr. has also shown promise in substandard offences over the last two seasons. If anything, he should get a chance to show that he can be the bell cow the Commanders need in the backfield under the guidance of running backs coach and run game coordinator Anthony Lynn.
