This year, the NFL wage cap skyrocketed to $255 million, taking the Washington Commanders with it.
With a league-high $96 million in cap space, the Commanders can now fill a roster that is rife with gaps by looking mostly to free agency.
Washington might use a portion of those funds to bolster their defence, which is losing cornerback Kendall Fuller, safety Kam Curl, and linebacker Cody Barton. Midway through the 2023 season, the Commanders also traded Montez Sweat and Chase Young, two of their defensive ends.
“The strength of the free agent group is in their defence, which is their biggest weakness,” analyst Sam Monson stated on Thursday’s episode of “The PFF NFL Podcast.” “I believe they can bring in some players who can really transform the defence by going shopping in free agency.”
Monson thinks that elite linebackers such as Brian Burns of the Carolina Panthers, Danielle Hunter of the Minnesota Vikings, and Bryce Huff of the New York Jets could be targets for the Commanders.
They could do two with the amount of money they had. They might double dip,” stated Monson. “I think it would be good if they could leave this free agent group with two starters, even if they are expensive players.”
The commanders might use the adaptable Kyle Dugger, a former member of the New England Patriots, to take Curl’s safety post.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen stated that the safety would work well in coach Dan Quinn’s defence because of Dugger’s exceptional position versatility at 6-foot-2 and 228 pounds.
